What
is it about fall that makes us want to eat? Halloween is coming, which makes it
hard to ignore all the candy lining the shelves of the grocery store. And with
Thanksgiving soon to follow I’ve been on a baking frenzy, party trying to
decide what goodies I want to make for Thanksgiving dinner this year and partly
just because it’s fall—it makes me want to bake (and eat).
And
I must not be the only one who is inspired by food this time of the year, as
evidenced by the various food festival events taking place
in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach this month. The National Shrimp Festival is
going on this weekend—lots of food and good fun there. Then next weekend is the
Alabama Festival of Flavor in Foley, and flavorful it is. It’s an excellent
time to get a real taste of Alabama’s fresh foods in the form of cooking
competitions and food and wine pairings. You can also browse and buy artwork by
various artists, and it’s a good place to bring the kids, too—they can enjoy
the children’s village while you enjoy a little wine and beer!
There’s
also the Original German Sausage Festival on Saturday, October 26th
in Elberta, which claims the “best German sausage you have ever tasted”! And
again, it’s quite the festival: live music, arts and crafts, carnival rides,
and even a Bier Garten.
