A Gulf Coast Fishing Rodeo—An Excellent Reason to Visit in July

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “deep sea fishing rodeo”? I admit, when I first heard this, I immediately envisioned some odd combination of bucking bulls, boats, and anglers. My next thought was a little more coherent: boats and anglers, yes, plus lots of Gulf fishing and competition.

And I think that’s a better description of what characterizes the 80th Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, which is on the events calendar for later this month in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach (July 19th to 21st). Thousands of anglers will fish for three days, competitively, with the ultimate goal of winning more than $400,000 in cash and prizes.

I learned about this from a friend who will be vacationing at Gulf Shores Plantation during this event—and whose husband is apparently participating in the tournament. Sounds like their vacation is shaping up to be quite the experience! Not only are they staying in the best (in my opinion) Gulf Shores resort, but they will get to be part of the largest fishing tournament in the world.

If I weren’t headed there myself in August, I’d be jealous…and maybe I am anyway.

Oh well. I hope they enjoy their July beach getaway—and I hope they win big!
