Spring Vacation on the Gulf—Don’t Forget the Bathing Suit

As our spring vacation gets closer, I find myself checking the Gulf Shores weather forecast almost daily. Know what I’m often finding? Temperatures in the 70s. A good it of sunshine. Spring really seems to be coming to life in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach.

I have high hopes that by the time we get down there in a few weeks, we’ll have no problem engaging in some outdoor swimming. And we’ll certainly have our pick at Gulf Shores Plantation—six outdoor swimming pools are part of the resort amenities. I love to bounce around and relax by each of the pools throughout the vacation, but my favorites are the ones that offer a view of the Gulf. Soaking in a resort swimming pool and gazing out at white-sand beaches and the Gulf beyond is the epitome of relaxation, in my mind.

And the Gulf—another swimming option if the weather is warm enough! I admit, I still enjoy dodging the waves; age hasn’t claimed that small joy yet. Although I do seem to spend less time in the water and more time on the beach (with a good book, of course) than I used to.

But even if the temperatures dip down a bit, or if we have rain, swimming won’t be out of the option, thanks to the resort’s indoor swimming pool. And that’s why we love Gulf Shores Plantation. Can’t wait to get down there!

Private Beach Cottage Plus Resort Amenities: The Perfect Vacation Setup

So word got out that we’re planning a spring trip to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, and our family vacation has now turned into the following: both of my kids are bringing one friend each, my parents are coming, and my sister and her family are coming.

And this is far from a complaint (as long as my kids choose the “right” friends). With so many people tagging along, it’s going to be quite an adventure. And it’s a perfect reason to rent a Gulf Shores Plantation beach cottage—we could all stay together in one house, we’d have a little privacy from other vacationers, and we would still have access to Gulf Shores Plantation amenities. It’s the best of both worlds!

The resort has 15 different beach cottages to choose from with varying sizes, sleeping arrangements, and views—from angled views of the beach to full Gulf views. There’s already talk of a “beach party” while we’re down there, so I’m going for a Gulf-front beach cottage—the best option for our large group!

Check Out the New National Scenic Byway App

I love my iPhone for many reasons, one big reason being that it allows me to download cool apps—like the Coastal Byway mobile app. It’s free to download and includes features like an attractions listing, interactive map, events, and videos. It’s also available as for Androids, too.

The Alabama Coastal Connection is one of my favorite Gulf Shores & Orange Beach nature attractions. My family tends to spend much time on the stretch between For Morgan and Gulf State Park—it’s the closest to Gulf Shores Plantation. But there’s so much more to see on this 130-mile scenic byway—museums, parks, nature preserves and trails (the Hugh S. Branyon Back Country Trail is a personal favorite). As many times as we’ve vacationed on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, even I haven’t seen the entire Byway. I sure would like to!

And with our spring vacation coming up, anything to help us explore the National Scenic Byway to its fullest extent is a welcome addition!

Not All Expenses Are Going Up

In spring 2010, my husband had just landed a new (and better) job, and we celebrated with a vacation in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach. Actually, the vacation would’ve happened regardless—the timing just worked out so that family vacation turned into a week-long celebration. And celebrate we did, with a couple nice dinners out, a deep-sea fishing excursion, a trip to Adventure Island for the kids, and topped everything off with Gulf shopping spree. It was a good week.

Two years later I’m thinking I might be able to plan this same trip, right down to the Gulf Shores Plantation condo rates—which, according to the Plantation’s Condo Bonus Days special, are the same now as they were two years ago. Considering the cost of everything else under the sun is increasing these days, I find this very refreshing and immensely helpful when planning a spring break getaway. And even better is that throughout spring (March 12th through May 22nd) the 4th and 7th nights are free. Not only will we be paying 2010 rates, we’ll only pay for six nights for a seven-night vacation. Yet another reason to celebrate!

Guess it’s time to start planning. I don’t mean to wish away time, but it wouldn’t be the worst thing if the next couple of months passed by quickly. Come on spring!

Don’t Just Plan: Prepare for Your Vacation

When it comes to vacations, I take seriously the belief that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, as I’ve been a victim of this phenomenon several times. (My car, for example, has a tendency to revolt against our vacations—once we’re halfway to our destination.) I do my best to plan and prepare, but any outside help is welcome, such as another pair of eyes to go over my list of items to pack, or the “Resources” page (under “Area Info”) on the Gulf Shores Plantation website.

This page actually saved us from a huge problem once. It provides recommendations of things to bring and consider when going on a trip, and one of the items mentioned is a spare set of car keys. This jogged my memory that we only had one set of keys to our family car, and though we had planned to have another set made, it never happened—until I saw this recommendation on the website. By the time we left on our vacation, we had that second set. So when I left the car keys in a shopping bag on the second day of vacation and then lost the shopping bag somewhere I still don’t remember, we simply took a cab back to the Plantation and retrieved the second set (which my husband held onto for the remainder of the vacation).

It’s a good resource to glance at when making preparations to visit the Gulf—you never know what you might’ve overlooked! And while some stuff can certainly be replaced once you arrive and realize what you forgot (the “Shopping” link is my other favorite page), others are simply irreplaceable—like the time we forgot my daughter’s favorite bear when she was very young. That might’ve been a worse mistake than losing the car keys.

Winter on the Gulf is Perfect for Golf

Recently, I got in touch with an old friend from school who lives up north (way up north, where it’s actually cold). The topic of golf came up, and I told her I’m planning to play a good bit next week. For her, the thought of playing golf right now sent chills up her spine.

But it’s a completely different story on the Gulf. Just checked the weather forecast for Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, and despite a little rain here and there, temperatures will be in the 60s during the day—the perfect temperature for golf, and the perfect setting for a winter golf vacation. That’s my Christmas present this year: a few nights at Gulf Shores Plantation along with a few rounds of golf. I couldn’t ask for a better gift!

This isn’t our first winter golf getaway to the Gulf, and if you’ve never done it I highly recommend it. It’s easy to plan with Gulf Shores Plantation—the website offers golf package request form on the Golf Packages page to help you get started. And don’t forget that one of the nicest golf courses is right next door to the resort: Kiva Dunes.

I think I’ve sold my friend on golf down here—maybe a Gulf reunion is in order!

I’m Dreaming of a Gulf Coast Christmas

Not just like the ones I used to know—I’ve never actually spent Christmas on the Gulf. But I’ve been thinking (and hinting) that it would be a pretty neat way to spend the holiday. The other day I was looking at some pictures of a Gulf Shores & Orange Beach vacation from a few years ago when we stayed in a Gulf Shores Plantation beach cottage, and it struck me that Christmas in a beach-side cottage would be quite an experience.

We could spend the winter break down there with family, and have all the space and privacy we need while still enjoying the resort’s amenities (hello indoor pool!). I’d wake up Christmas morning, have a cup of coffee on the balcony while looking out at the Gulf, and celebrate the day within the coziness of a private vacation house. Plus we’d get to enjoy the local festivities, like Bellingrath’s Magic Christmas in Lights, and engage in some Gulf-style Christmas shopping.

The hints have been laid out, so we’ll see what happens. If it doesn’t happen this year, then next year, for sure, I’m putting my Christmas-beach-cottage plan into action myself!

What to Do About Thanksgiving Dinner on the Gulf

Oh, to spend Thanksgiving in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach! A work colleague of mine is headed down there this week with her husband a small group of friends, and I am just a bit jealous (we are headed north this year to spend the holiday with friends).

I won’t know what they decided until I see her at work next week, but they had been debating whether to enjoy dinner out on Thanksgiving or follow tradition and cook a big meal in their condo. If they decide to eat out, they’ll have plenty of options: several Gulf Shores & Orange Beach restaurants will be open for business Thursday. And the whole purpose of vacation is, after all, relaxation—why worry over preparing a big meal (and the post-meal cleanup) when a restaurant can take care of it for you?

On the other hand, I personally am a fan of tradition. I’m pretty sure that if we were spending Thanksgiving on the Gulf, I would put the kitchen of our Gulf Shores Plantation condo or beach cottage to good use. Maybe. Or maybe the temptation of a good dinner out at a beach-side restaurant would be too much.

Maybe we’ll get the chance to find out next year…better start planning next year’s holiday getaway on the Gulf.

Speaking of Winter (Already), It’s Time for Winter Vacation Rates

As early as it may seem, stores are already fully decorated for Christmas, radio stations are already playing holiday music (one in my listening area is!), and winter rates at Gulf Shores Plantation are already in place.

I know the early holiday push is a bit controversial—some love it, some hate it—but I think most of us can get on board with lower rates for a Gulf Shores & Orange Beach vacation. And there are a couple ways to save. First, the winter rates start at $85 per night—which is a deal in and of itself. Second, you also get the third night for free.

This could be a good gift for the family (it’s definitely an excellent gift for me!). Just imagine: a couple clicks of the mouse and holiday shopping for the kids and husband is done (basically), without having to endure the stores’ much-too-early Christmas music (which I actually secretly love).

The new rates started on November 1st. Time to catch up and book that vacation!

Kiva Dunes is Right Next Door, But Don’t Forget the Other Golf Courses!

A good friend of mine and her husband are vacationing at Gulf Shores Plantation for the first time in a couple weeks. These two are very into golf, and one big reason they chose Gulf Shores Plantation is its close proximity to Kiva Dunes. A daily round of golf is part of their plans, but they can’t agree on where—he likes the thought that they can just walk over to Kiva Dunes and thus wants to play there exclusively, and she wants to play a different course each day.

My advice: throw in at least a couple extra courses. The convenience of Kiva Dunes really is a bonus, not to mention the course is just beautiful. But you’re missing out on a lot if you skip the other area golf courses altogether. Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club, for example, is situated next to the Bon Secour Wildlife Preserve, and the golf course winds through a scenic setting of cypress and oak groves. Rock Creek in Fairhope has some high elevations with stunning wetland views; wetlands are also part of the courses at TimberCreek and Lost Key.

I’ve played all of the popular golf courses in and around Gulf Shores & Orange Beach at least once, and they are all worth trying. I recommend customizing a Gulf Shores Plantation golf package to fit your ideal golf vacation—whether it’s seven days in a row at one favorite golf course or a different course every day.

Who’s Headed for the Shrimp Festival?

The 40th Annual National Shrimp Festival is less than a week away, and for many of us that means one very important thing: a trip to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach is right around the corner!

The Shrimp Festival has special meaning for my husband and me—it was the big event going on when we took our first vacation together as a couple. It’s what started our annual fall Gulf vacations, and each year we do our best to make it back.

I have this collection of artwork in my home office, one piece from each year we’ve made it to the Shrimp Festival—I have eleven pieces so far. It’s one of my favorite activities, perusing the more than 200 arts and crafts booths in search of that perfect item to add to my collection.

We took the kids a couple times when they were younger; the Children’s Activity Village was a big hit with them (aw, the memories!). But the thing we all enjoyed together was the food—even my little picky eaters couldn’t get enough of the Gulf shrimp!

There’s still time to make plans to attend. Gulf Shores Plantation is even offering a third night three during the four-day event, October 13th through 16th, which means a little extra to spend on that perfect piece of art!

Plenty to Do in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach in October

October just might be my favorite month of the year, and I’m now officially counting down the days left in September. Cooler weather, Octoberfests, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and the general buildup to Halloween make this next month such a festive time of year. On top of all that, October also holds in store our fall getaway in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach.

And what a fun time to visit the area! Besides the typical fall festivities, events like Thunder on the Gulf and the National Shrimp Festival are taking place October 6th to 9th and October 13th to 16th (respectively).

It’s a good time of year for bird activity, too—Faulkner State Community College in Fairhope is hosting the Alabama Coastal Birdfest the same weekend as Thunder on the Gulf. This truly sounds like an interesting event to attend, particularly if you enjoy nature and boats: more than 20 expert-guided walking and boat tours to various spots on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. And the Fall Bird Banding Season runs from October 8th through 20th, so if you’re in the area during that time I strongly recommend heading over to Fort Morgan to check out the various migratory birds pass through the area.

Looks like there will be plenty for us to do while visiting, and lots of ways to celebrate the arrival of fall.

Fall on the Gulf—A Perfect Time to Visit

With only about a week of summer left, I have some planning to do. It’s almost time for the annual fall weekend getaway to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach with the hubby.

We’ll take this trip in October—a perfect time for visiting the Gulf. The cool morning air is ideal for a round of golf that time of year. Or sometimes we’ll go on a morning hike through Gulf State Park and try to catch one of the coastal birds on camera. By the time we return to our condo, the day has warmed up and we head to the beach or pool, where we spend the day simply relaxing (often we go back and forth between the two). By evening we’re ready for a nice dinner out, preferably somewhere we can enjoy the cool evening air—or we may take advantage of our condo’s full kitchen and have a cozy dinner in.

It’s always a wonderful introduction to the fall season. And not that planning this mini-vacation isn’t enjoyable anyway, but I’m especially enjoying it this year—getting one night free always helps. Gulf Shores Plantation is now offering Fall Condo Bonus Days, which means our third night is free (as long as arrive sometime between now and October 31st).

One night free equates to saved money, which translates to: shopping spree! And thus completes a perfect weekend getaway on the Gulf.

My First App—Vacation Planning Just Got Easier

I admit, I am pretty behind the times—I read paper books, I almost exclusively work at a desktop computer, and my phone does little more than make phone calls and send texts (my kids think it’s amazing that I even know what texting is!). But I may finally be catching up with the 21st century.

Thanks to my Gulf Shores & Orange Beach obsession (which has me constantly scouring the internet for vacation deals, upcoming events, etc.) I came across a new mobile app. (No, I didn’t know what an “app” was at first, and yes my kids did fill me in.) This vacation guide app apparently provides accommodation listings, information on restaurants and events, forecasts the weather in the area, and lets you check into Facebook Places—which is great because I see everyone else doing this on Facebook and have never been able to do it myself.

You can download it from the iTunes and Android Marketplace websites.

So I’ve decided that I must upgrade my phone and get into this “app” craze, and I must get this Gulf Shores & Orange Beach app—imagine the vacation-planning possibilities!

Happy Anniversary, Gulf Shores Plantation!

In 1986 I was in high school, had not met my husband yet, and had never been to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach; Gulf Shores Plantation, meanwhile, was just getting started as the fabulous beach resort it is today. Twenty-five years later things are so much different—not only do I travel to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach every year (usually several times) with my now-known husband and our wonderful family, but Gulf Shores Plantation has become our favorite regular vacation spot.

And thanks to the resort’s 25th anniversary—and the excellent deal they’re offering to celebrate this anniversary—we just might make one more end-of-summer trip to the Gulf. This latest special is offering condo rentals at the 1986 rates—as low as $65 a night (for a minimum of three nights) for arrivals between August 13th and 27th if you stay at Plantation East, Dunes, or West. Another option is to stay at Plantation Palms or a cottage for 25% off (with a minimum four-night stay for the cottages).

Back to School Shopping is Upon Us

It sneaks up on me every year, and this year is no exception: the first day of school is almost here. I realized just the other day that the kids will be back at school in just a couple of weeks. Where did the summer go?

I was all set to start stressing about back-to-school shopping when my daughter asked if she could go on a last-minute trip to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach with one of her friends and her friend’s family. Her main motivation for wanting to go (besides, of course, going to the beach): shopping.

I certainly don’t blame her for wanting to do her shopping down there. Between the various shopping locations like SanRoc Cay, The Wharf, and the Tanger Outlet Center, she should be able to find some fun new fashions to start the school year—and have fun in the process.

I’m a little jealous, actually. I love shopping in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach. Maybe I could convince my husband to take one more quick summer trip to the Gulf—if I promise that I’ll do the shopping while he plays golf, I think I can sell the idea. And the tax-free weekend is coming up on August 6th and 7th. Sounds like a good time for some Gulf shopping to me!

Pool With a View

One of the greatest feelings I experience throughout my year is arriving in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach for vacation and getting that first glimpse of the Gulf. No matter how many times we visit, the sight thrills me every time—it’s a sign that vacation in this beautiful place has begun.

This last trip was no different, and I realized one very big reason why I love staying at Gulf Shores Plantation: the constant views of the beach and Gulf. We had a gorgeous view from our three-bedroom condo—I think I could’ve spent the entire vacation sitting on the balcony drinking wine.

But I had to get some pool time in, too, and fortunately the resort’s six outdoor pools have views of the beach. That’s the best of both worlds right there: being able to relax by the pool while still enjoying views of the Gulf. Even the putting green and one of the tennis courts have Gulf views. I can tell you that a game of tennis with such a stunning view in the background makes for a refreshing and invigorating athletic experience.

It was a wonderful vacation, as usual. The fall getaway seems too far off. In the meantime, I’ll have to settle for looking at the dozens of Gulf-view pictures we all took. Ah, the memories!

Gather Up Those Family Vacation Photos

We’ve always been fortunate when it comes to vacation funding. Sometimes it gets a little tough—emergency home and car repairs have threatened to deplete our vacation savings more than once. But so far, we’ve always managed to pull through and make whatever concessions necessary to ensure our Gulf getaways, whether it’s eating out less or putting that new wardrobe on hold.

This year, I’m hoping for a little break in the form of three free nights in a two-bedroom Gulf Shores Plantation condo.

Am I hoping someone will just offer this to me? Maybe a little. But mostly, no. I have years worth of fantastic (in my opinion) photos of our family vacations at the Plantation, and I’m planning to submit one to the Gulf Shores Plantation Summer Fun Photo Contest. The prize, if you haven’t guessed, is a three-night stay in a two-bedroom Gulf Shores Plantation condo. More information about the contest is available on the Gulf Shores Plantation website.

The hard (but fun) part will be picking the best photo—or maybe trying for a new one when we’re down there again. The contest ends July 31st, so if you don’t have a good photo yet, there’s still time to get down there and take one!

Growing Kids Equals Growing Adventures

One thing I’ve always loved about having kids is getting to do all the fun, kid-like activities. This really makes vacations interesting—when they were little we got to do things like visit the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, play mini-golf and ride bumper cars at places like The Track and Adventure Island, and check out the alligators at Alligator Alley.

They’re at an interesting age now. They’re not as into mini-golf and alligators, but there’s a whole new level of fun stuff they’ve started dragging us into. The last time we visited Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, they wanted to do the zip line and ropes course at the Wharf Adventure Zone—which I was hesitant about trying but ended up being really fun! And they’re already talking about how when we go back this summer they want to go parasailing. Again, I’m a little apprehensive (I’ve never been parasailing) but I’m sure I’ll love it.

I hope when they’re grown and gone, my husband and I can keep up this adventurous spirit on our own. I also hope we can still squeeze in some innocent fun at the zoo again!

Last Minute Memorial Day Savings

I’m a little—just a little—jealous, but jealous nonetheless. My good friend informed me that she and her family decided to visit the beach for Memorial Day this year. They made this decision last minute. Low and behold, Gulf Shores Plantation was offering a Last Minute Memorial Day special.

I’m sure we’ll have a nice Memorial Day cooking out at home and visiting with family. But I know my friend will have a particularly fun and memorable holiday, swimming in the resort’s seven pools and grilling out Gulf-side. It’s alright—a few more weeks and we’ll be back!

How to Save on Gas

I think we can all agree that filling up the gas tank these days is nothing short of a painful experience. It can really put a damper on a road trip and eat away at a vacation budget.

I’ve started doing things like only filling half my tank, avoiding turning on the air conditioner if at all possible, and limiting trips to the store to two a week. But the best way I’ve discovered to save on gas this spring is by booking a vacation with Gulf Shores Plantation.

One of their current specials offers a gas credit ranging from $25 to $100 depending on how long and where you stay. For a three-night stay sometime between May 30^th and June 15^th, you get a $25 gas credit; a seven-night stay during the same time frame will get you $50 in gas. And if you book a seven-night stay at a cottage between May 28^th and June 11^th, you get a whopping $100 gas credit.

Vacationing with Nature

Well, spring break has come and gone, as has our trip to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach. I think it’s safe to say we all had a good time—the weather was great and we got to spend a good amount of time doing something we all enjoy: exploring nature.

This year we brought all the bikes down with us, which we put to good use on the Hugh S. Branyon Back Country Trail. Twice during the week we biked the entire 10 miles of this trail. The experience of bike-riding through four different ecosystems and seeing the varying wildlife within is such an invigorating one—plus it helped keep my weight stable despite diverging from my normally healthy diet. (I find it impossible to sit on the beach without snacking on potato chips.)

We also explored the coastal waters via kayaking with Alabama Kayak Adventures, and visited the Biophilia Nature Center, something we haven’t done since the kids were young. Various species of plants and flowers, butterfly gardening, plant and animal artifacts—you’re never too old to enjoy these types of things!

All in all, it was a good trip. Can’t wait to go back this summer!

Extra Days—Just in Time for Spring Break!

Our spring break vacation is almost here, and we’ve decided to treat the kids to a special fishing excursion this year. It’s been a couple years since we last did a big fishing trip. It was a big hit last time—all of us have wanted to go back ever since. Originally, it wasn’t in the plans for this trip, due to budgeting purposes.

But low and behold, we actually ended up saving a couple nights worth of lodging, thanks to Gulf Shores Plantation’s Extra Days, Extra Savings special. Book seven nights, only pay for five, and save an extra 15% on top of that. The other option is to book four nights and pay for three, with an extra 10% savings. Good for vacations between April 5^th through May 23^rd, it’s an excellent way to maximize your budget and get the most out of your vacation. Like everyone else, I’ve been watching gas prices go higher and higher. I keep wondering how much more my wallet can handle, and we’ve had some recent discussions around my house about whether summer travel will happen at all. And then I saw Gulf Shores Plantation’s latest special.

First of all, they’re not increasing their rates this year—their 2011 rates are the same as the 2010 rates. I almost fell out of my chair when I read that, given how every other expense is on the rise these days!

Even better, if you stay with Gulf Shores Plantation between March 14^th and May 23^rd, the fourth and seventh nights are free; the seventh night is free if you stay between May 24^th and July 29^th; and, again, the fourth and seventh nights are free at the end of summer, between July 30^th and September 5^th.

This covers our spring and summer vacations, so I know we’ll at least get to visit Gulf Shores & Orange Beach! Now if only the economy would follow the same trend.

Gearing Up for a Family Sports Tournament

We got our kids a Wii for Christmas. Before then, I really knew nothing about Wii—and now I think I play it more than the kids. I pay a visit to the Wii Sports Resort at least a couple times a week. For a while I even had a borderline unhealthy addiction to Wii table tennis.

Obsession aside, it’s actually been a fun family bonding method for all of us during the cold weeks of winter. We pair up into teams and compete with each other in bowling, tennis, basketball, and golf. And now that the weather is finally warming up, we’re eager to step up our competition and move it a real-world venue. So come our spring trip to Gulf Shores Plantation, we’ll be challenging each other to a golf-tennis-basketball tournament.

It’s really the perfect location for this purpose—fun, friendly environment, eight tennis courts and a basketball court on the property and Kiva Dunes right next door (and several other great golf courses around the area). I’m thinking we should take advantage of the seven pools and throw in a swimming competition.

We still have a few more weeks before the big trip, leaving us lots of Wii practice. Should be an interesting tournament!

Spring Break is Coming—Time to Plan the Golf Trip!

Wow, the weather has really improved compared to a couple weeks ago! It’s hard to believe it’s only February. And it looks like this weekend will continue to be really nice—perfect golf weather!

This shot of early spring has me really looking forward to the big spring break trip to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach. We have an agreement with the kids this year: they get their morning freedom, and we get our morning round of golf. And since we’ll be there for seven days, that gives us seven rounds of golf.

We will, of course, customize a golf vacation package with Gulf Shores Plantation, and my husband and I have agreed that we want to play a different course every day. Now the issue is which courses to pick. There are a couple that we’ll definitely include—we love the beauty and convenience of Kiva Dunes (it’s right next door to the Plantation), and the Arnold Palmer-designed Cotton Creek at Craft Farms presents a fun challenge for us. But with nine courses to choose from and only seven days to play, two will have to be left out. Unless we can squeeze in a couple extra rounds during the week. Guess we better think of another deal for the kids!

Anniversary Plans

My husband and I have always said that, for our 25^th anniversary, we’d take a trip out of the country—Paris or Italy, or maybe even Australia. We’ve been setting a little money aside here and there for this big trip, and we still have several more years to plan. Although now, seeing how Gulf Shores Plantation is going to celebrate its 25^th anniversary, I might be changing my mind on a big-money trip.

In honor of Mandoki Hospitality’s 25^th anniversary at the Plantation, guests can get rates as low as $55 per night on stays between February 27^th and March 13^th. Not only is that a fantastic rate, but it’s such a great time to visit the area, too—a little getaway right at the end of winter, just when you think spring will never arrive. The Nature of Spring

Right about now is when I begin thinking longingly of spring. I can hardly wait for that first warm day, and for the first buds to appear on the trees. For me, nature is the best part of spring, and I am really looking forward to visiting my favorite location nature and wildlife observation: Gulf Shores & Orange Beach.

The area offers so many ways to experience nature. Simply walking along a hiking trail has always been a favorite pastime of mine, and there are so many to choose from: the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail passes through over 50 birding sites, while the Hugh S. Branyon Back Country Trail winds through four different ecosystems (to name just a couple preferences). Nature centers are excellent places to learn a little about the local wildlife—the Biophillia Nature Center presents a variety of plants, a butterfly nursery, and biologist-guided tours, and the interactive exhibits at the Estuarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab are a neat way to learn about the local estuary system.

But what I really want to visit when we’re visiting this spring is the Bellingrath Gardens and Home—65 acres of spring gardens and a lavish 1930s home!

January Events

I was looking at Gulf Shores Plantation’s calendar of events for January, and there are several interesting events taking place in the area this month. Three different Entertainment Series 2011 shows at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores are scheduled for January: 4 Troops, Chaplin: A Life in Concert, and American Big Band. I personally would like to see the American Big Band show: 20 singers, dancers, and musicians performing to the tunes of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman, among others.

The South Baldwin Community Theatre is also putting on a production this month—The Last of the Red Hot Lovers—and the Artists of Ono Island Exhibit is on display at the Orange Beach Arts Center (I love art!).

I’m a little jealous—okay, very jealous—of my neighbor, who’s planning a mid-winter getaway to Gulf Shores. I might not have even known about it (we don’t see this particular neighbor often) but, knowing that my family visits the area often, she asked for my advice on where to stay. So I was happy to recommend not only Gulf Shores Plantation, but also their Third Night Free special—every third night is free—which is good on stays from now to February 28^th, 2011.

So she’ll get to save a good chunk of money on her trip while staying at a fabulous resort—a very big plus after all the spending of the holiday season. And hopefully my advice will bring us a little closer to this distant neighbor, assuming their vacation goes well (and I’m sure it will).

Bellingrath Magic Christmas in Lights

It has been years since we’ve been to the Bellingrath Gardens Magic Christmas in Lights. I was just looking at some old pictures taken the last time we visited this spectacular light display. If I had the time, I would be planning a last-minute trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast just to see these lights.

It truly is a magnificent sight: hundreds of light displays throughout the gardens, and the decorations adorning the Bellingrath home itself are absolutely beautiful. And the nightly choral performances really help set the mood. It’s the perfect atmosphere for shopping in the Bellingrath Gardens gift shop (which has some really neat items).

And let’s not forget about Santa, who’s available for photographs—although I’m pretty sure my kids would say they’re too old for that part. (Then again, maybe not!)

Christmas, then Golf

So Christmas is less than two weeks away now. That’s a bitter-sweet feeling for me—I look forward to Christmas day, but I know the post-holiday blues are soon to follow, along with the dull months of January and February.

It’s about that time when I start occupying myself with thoughts of golf along the Gulf and planning for the big spring trip. There’s nothing quite like hitting the golf course down in Gulf Shores in the first of the year’s warm weather. There are so many great golf courses in the area to choose from, which makes planning a golf vacation package with Gulf Shores Plantation easy. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the remainder of the holiday season. Maybe Santa will bring me a new golf club to try out this spring!

We are having quite the cold snap in the South these days! And I have to say, I don’t mind it—it puts me in the Christmas spirit. How can I be dreaming of a white Christmas if it’s not cold?

Anyone visiting the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area will have more than just the frigid weather to put them in a holiday mood. Several holiday activities are going on this month: train rides to visit Santa at the North Pole, sleigh rides, Christmas plays, parades, and one of my personal favorites—the annual Trim-a-Tree event. I love seeing all the trees decorated with handmade ornaments. Plus they make excellent gifts!

Enjoy the festivities—and the weather—while they last. (Then look forward to the return of milder temperatures!)

Holiday Workout

Well, the big Thanksgiving dinner went over without a hitch. A good time was had by all, and I’m pretty sure I gained at least 10 pounds—a sure sign of a good meal (and good desserts). Now that the big feast is over, I can hardly wait to get down to Gulf Shores Plantation and put their amenities to good use.

I think several laps in the indoor pool, a few visits to the exercise room, and a nice vigorous round of tennis will help me shed some of the extra pounds. And it’s easy to get motivated down there: just the sight of the beach is enough to inspire thoughts of bathing suit weather (which will be here before we know it!). Now if I could only keep that motivation through the Christmas cookie season!

Thanksgiving Dinner Out

Only a couple more days to Thanksgiving! We are having a big get-together this year: brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins will be gracing us with their presence. And this means I’m on deck to prepare the biggest meal of my life. I think next year we’ll just eat out!

If you’re spending the Thanksgiving holiday at the Alabama Gulf Coast, eating out is certainly a viable option this year. Several area restaurants will be open on Thanksgiving Day and serving some excellent meals—everything from traditional Thanksgiving menu items and buffets to seafood platters Cajun-fried turkey. And, of course, several restaurants are including dessert.

After this year’s monster feast, I think we’re heading for a Gulf Thanksgiving next year!

Thanksgiving Sail

I do enjoy a good shopping excursion, particularly when killer deals are involved. But you will never find me shopping the day after Thanksgiving. I won’t even make a quick trip to the drug store on that day. I just cannot handle the crowds and chaos.

Now, a day-after-Thanksgiving sail I think I could handle, and that’s what Wild Hearts the Ocean Catamaran is offering. I’ll take a two-hour peaceful ocean sail over a two-hour shopping frenzy any day! And it’s a great way to spend the day after Thanksgiving with family—out in the fresh air and sunshine rather than snoozing the day away after eating too many leftovers.

Indoor Pool

There are so many reasons why I’m looking forward to our fall getaway at Gulf Shores Plantation. At the moment, one big draw is the indoor pool.

I took up evening swimming over the summer—I’ve found it to be an effective form of stress relief and excellent exercise. Obviously, now that it’s fall, swimming isn’t exactly an option. I really miss it!

So for the few days that we are in Gulf Shores, I will be taking advantage of the resort’s indoor pool during the evenings—maybe during the day, too! My hope is that resuming this relaxing swim routine on top of an already peaceful vacation will make up for the last two months of not being able to swim. If only we could just live there year-round!

History Can Be Fun

I watched my son reading up for his U.S. history class—a practice that used to be a rarity. It was only last year that he was struggling with history. He said he found it incredibly boring, and getting him to study was like pulling teeth.

And now I can’t help but remember what turned his whole attitude around: when we visited the Battle of Mobile Bay Civil War Trail. He was fascinated with the stories and images we encountered along the trail. Being able to see and touch actual cannons and forts made it much more real and relevant for him. Fort Gaines was his favorite attraction—the way they bring the battles and stories to life makes the experience more than just educational.

The whole experience really breathed life into his interest in historical events. If you’ve never visited any of the historical attractions along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, I highly recommend you do so during your next visit!

Get Away and Save a Little

Well, it’s almost Halloween, which means we’re getting into my favorite time of year—and a rather expensive time of year. The spending starts with the Halloween costumes, followed by Thanksgiving with its big meal preparations and traveling, then starts the Christmas shopping—both gifts and decorations. With all the activity, a small vacation squeezed in somewhere seems necessary! But with all the expenses of the season, coming up with the money for a getaway may be difficult.

Luckily, Gulf Shores Plantation is offering 50% off four-night vacations during November, December, and up until January 3^rd. The offer is even good during the actual holidays. Now that’s something to be thankful for! Imagine spending Thanksgiving or Christmas on the Gulf, or simply recuperating from holiday stress with a mini beach vacation.

A Good Problem

Plans for our Gulf Shores fall getaway are moving along nicely. It’s going to be a good one! We of course had saved up the money for this trip, but thanks to Gulf Shores Plantation’s Third Night Free special, we’ll get to save some of that money and put it toward something else.

Now the question (argument?) is what to do with the extra money. My husband wants an extra round of golf whereas I’m hoping for a dolphin cruise, or maybe a shopping spree (or both!). Or perhaps we should just save the money and put it toward the next trip—always have to plan ahead!

Whatever we end up doing, there’s no question that we’re going to have a great time!

Feel Like Wine-ing?

I much prefer “wine-ing” to whining. A nice glass of wine (or other drink of choice) at the end of a tough day does wonders for my stressed mind, and helps prevent—or at least reduce—the not-so-pleasant whine that might otherwise follow.

I love my glass of wine at those moments, but nothing quite compares to wine when I’m already relaxed—such as when sitting on the beach or on the balcony of my Gulf Shores Plantation condo. And the latest wine experience I’d like to try is “Women Wine-ing on Wednesdays” aboard the Wild Hearts Ocean Catamaran. On Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m., women only—and their drinks—get to board the catamaran for a two-hour sunset cruise, complete with soft drinks and Hor d’oeuvres.

So rather than whine to each other, we can wine with each other. Sounds like a fun mid-week plan to me!

Keeping Up the Golf Game

We’re playing golf at a nearby golf course this weekend. I haven’t played since my last vacation, and that last time was in Gulf Shores. And you just can’t beat the golf in that area. Several beautiful, challenging courses to choose from, Gulf breezes wafting through the golf cart—it’s no wonder we love our golf vacations down there!

My favorite is Kiva Dunes, partly because it’s just a gorgeous and luxurious course, and partly because it’s right next to Gulf Shores Plantation, which is really convenient when your spouse is as golf-crazy as mine (yes, I enjoy the sport too, but he’s a complete fanatic).

So the “regular” golf course we’re going to this weekend isn’t quite as exciting as golfing on the Gulf, but it’s still golf (which we love) and it’s good practice (which we need!).

Autumn on the Beach

I love autumn on the beach. I enjoy autumn in general: the changing leaves, the cool-down from summer, the fall festivities.

But a trip to the Gulf during this time really enhances the season. You get the best of both worlds—cooler temperatures than summer but still warm enough to enjoy the beach and the outdoor activities. And there are so many activities going on along the Alabama Gulf Coast during this time of year (Thunder on the Gulf, National Shrimp Festival, beach concerts, to name a few).

I can’t wait to get down there with my husband for our annual fall getaway. The planning process is underway—more to come on that later!

Looking Back

Summer vacationing is over, and yet fall hasn’t quite begun. We’re caught in the middle of seasons—a perfect place to be for reminiscing and planning ahead.

One of my favorite things to do right about now is pull up vacation pictures and re-live the summer’s experiences: beach trips, concerts, nature excursions. One of my favorite sets of pictures, though, was from a stay at Gulf Shores Plantation where I managed to take a picture of activity going on at each of the seven pools—even the indoor pool where we camped out one rainy day.

I can also see what I missed out on this time: I managed to squeeze in some tennis and even a game of horseshoes, but skipped the resort’s basketball court. I’ll try to fit all the amenities in during the next trip. Time to start planning!

Plan Ahead for an Eventful October

October is shaping up to be an interesting month along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, and now is a good time to start planning a trip to the area. First, the 39^th Annual National Shrimp Festival is taking place October 7^th to the 10^th. This event is a must if you’re in the area during those dates—fresh Gulf seafood, continuous live music, a children’s village, and fine art and crafts from more than 300 vendors.

Shortly after is the 8^th Annual Thunder on the Gulf from October 12^th to 17^th. Exhilarating boat races on the Gulf, parties, contests, and a poker run—what’s not to love?

Two free (though still ticketed) concerts are planned for the same weekend as Thunder on the Gulf: Bon Jovi on October 15^th and Brad Paisley on the 17^th. These are part of the Concerts for the Coast series.

Then we end the month with the Original German Sausage Festival on October 30^th. It’s free to the public, and visitors can enjoy arts and crafts, live music, carnival rides, and the Bier Garten—in addition to delicious German sausage, of course.

The great thing about the Alabama Gulf Coast is there is so much to choose from: beaches, nature, history, shopping, nightlife…enough to keep you busy for days.

With so much to choose from, having a plan—or itinerary—can be quite helpful. Maybe you want to spend a day or two checking out the nature scene—checking out Alabama’s Coastal Connection, the carnivorous plants and butterfly nurseries at the Biophillia Nature Center, bird watching at the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuaries, and maybe a trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. Another day could be spent exploring the area’s rich history at places like Fort Morgan and the National Museum of Naval Aviation.

Or maybe you want to gear your itinerary toward relaxation: spend the morning at the pool or beach with a good book (and maybe throw in a nap), get a massage and facial at a spa, then top it off with a nice dinner out.

Time to Shop

It happens to all of us at some point: You’re going out of town, and as you pack your bags, you check off the items on your list—whether it’s a mental list or one you meticulously created—trying to ensure that nothing is left behind. But no matter how many times you review the list, you can’t shake the feeling that something was excluded, and you just can’t think of what it is…until you get to your destination and realize you forgot your sunglasses, your bathing suit, or your camera.

If you’re traveling to the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area, it’s not a problem. The area offers plenty of shopping venues to cover anything you might need. Check out the deals at the Tanger Outlet Center, combine dining and shopping at Bayou Village and SanRoc Cay, or simply enjoy the inviting atmosphere at Easter Shore Centre. Roughing It

I’ve never been a big fan of camping. Dealing with mosquitoes and other bugs, showering in a public restroom (if there’s a shower at all!), cooking food by campfire…it’s just never appealed to me. Typical one-bedroom hotel rooms are a little better, but not much—many still lack a kitchen, and the space issue isn’t ideal for long stays.

A vacation getaway does not have to mean getting away from the comforts of living. If you stay with Gulf Shores Plantation, you won’t feel like you’re missing anything: two- to five-bedroom fully furnished condos with functional kitchens equipped with everything from major appliances to dishes and utensils. Warm Up on the Putting Green

We all have our weaknesses in the game of golf, even the best golfers among us. My biggest weakness comes into play as soon as soon as I step foot on the green. It takes a lot of concentration for me to avoid rolling the ball back and forth past the hole.

One thing that helps me is using the putting green before I play. I haven’t always done this, but I’ve discovered that when I warm up on the putting green, my short game seems much easier. I feel more relaxed coming into this part of the game.

Having access to a putting green is a big plus at Gulf Shores Plantation, especially considering that Kiva Dunes, one of the best golf courses in the country, is right next door—you want to be on your game when playing this course!

Even if you’re not about to play golf, the putting green is another resort amenity available to guests looking for a relaxing activity.

A Taste of History

Beaches and pools are excellent places to spend a vacation, but in an area like Alabama’s Gulf Coast, with its Civil War sites, historic forts, and museums, exploring the local history and culture can add a little depth and adventure.

Anyone interested in the Civil War—or just battles in general—will find plenty of interesting spots around the area. Fort Gaines, Fort Mims, and Fort Morgan all tell tales of historic battles, and Historic Blakely State Park is the site of the last major Civil War battle.

Various museums display the local history. And if you’re into aviation and battleships, you’ll want to check out the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park and National Museum of Naval Aviation—lots of aircraft and military equipment, plus the aviation museum has flight simulators and IMAX movies.

My favorite thing about vacationing at a condo are the amenities. And Gulf Shores Plantation has a lot of amenities: six outdoor pools and one indoor pool, eight tennis courts, basketball, shuffleboard, horseshoes and a putting green, just to name a few.

We just received a stack of new comments from our recent guests. It is always rewarding to look through and see how they describe their experience at Gulf Shores Plantation. Bird is the Word

Later this month, birding enthusiasts will flock to nearby Fort Morgan for an extraordinary event.

The Spring Bird Banding Session is an important time for the crew at the Hummer/Bird Study Group and the volunteers that come out to assist them.

Fort Morgan is a key location on the path of thousands of Neo-tropical migrant birds. It is the first landfall after their long journey and in the fall it will be their last departure point.

This provides an opportunity for the group to monitor the bird population and learn more about their behavior.

Last year's spring banding recorded 76 species.

The banding sessions take place from March 27th to April 8th. The admission to the Fort is only $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 6-12, and free to younger children. The bird banding sessions are free to all.

For a more comfortable and enjoyable session, bring your lawn chair and binoculars. Members of the group will be glad to answer questions and explain the process.

As Bellingrath Gardens' floral guru Chuck Owens will explain, the success of what happens above the ground depends heavily on what happens in the ground.

The final program in the Winter Wednesdays series, this week's topic is Horticulture by the Numbers. During the program, Chuck will take the mystery out of all those numbers on the bag of fertilizer and explain how to measure your soil's pH level.

Knowing these details will help you find balance in your own garden. It won't guarantee a green thumb, but it is a step in the right direction.

There is just something about a parade!

Do you feel it too? The excitement of waiting along the parade route for the floats, the marching bands and the convertibles with people perched on the back.

A regular parade like that is certainly a thrill. So just imagine how much fun it is when the parade is a Mardi Gras parade!

Elaborate themes and costumed riders celebrating the Mardi Gras season! And they are loaded with candy and Moon Pies and other treats to toss to folks along the parade route.

Here at the beach we are ready to say farewell to winter and hello to spring. For us, Mardi Gras is an important time in that transition. And we hope you'll join us in the fun.

Dauphin Island kicks off the season on January 16th with the Krewe De La Dauphine Mardi Gras Parade. Mobile parades begin on January 29th and conclude with a full day of revelry on Fat Tuesday (February 16).

The Gulf Shores parade rolls on Fat Tuesday at 10am and is followed by the Orange Beach parade at 1:30pm - a great day of Mardi Gras fun at the beach!
