Having Fun with History on the Gulf Coast

Learning while on vacation?!? That doesn’t sound right. But if you’re like me, you want to marvel at sites that you’ve only read about. In my experience, actually standing in a historic location fuels the desire to learn everything about it. History can be such fun when knowledge is experienced first-hand!

Alabama’s Gulf Coast may be famous for its beaches, but what most people don’t know is that the area is rich in historical treasures. All of you history buffs will love the convenience of staying at Gulf Shores Plantation because there is a National Historic Site about 8.5 miles down the road on Mobile Bay. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you dead end at the unique star shaped site called Fort Morgan.

For those of you that don’t know (or remember), Fort Morgan has guarded Mobile Bay since 1834 and was active during four wars, although the fort is most famous for its role in the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay. Visitors can explore artillery batteries and buildings dating back to 1895. There is also a museum for those of you who want to see military exhibits. http://www.fortmorgan.org/

The fort is not the only historical attraction that can’t be missed. There are lots of things to see and do while you’re vacationing at the Gulf Shores Plantation. Check out other sites that will make history fun! http://www.gulfshoresplantation.com/history
